چکیده

Logistical constraints have caused data collection in seasonally-snow covered areas to generally be on a campaign basis with limited instrumentation. The problems of winter access, cold air temperatures, and blowing snow cause both equipment malfunctions and problems with consistent and timely maintenance. At the Long-Term Ecological Research (LTER) network site in an alpine area of Colorado, we have been operating a meteorological station and subnivean (below snow) laboratory at 3517 m since the spring of 1994 to collect information that will allow us to better understand snow-surface energy exchanges and the mass flux of water during snowmelt. This unique and high-quality data set was designed to measure the meteorologic and hydrologic parameters necessary to compute the surface energy and snowpack mass balances at a point. All meteorological parameters are directly measured. Turbulent fluxes are calculated using the aerodynamic profile method. The timing and magnitude of snowmelt is measured with 18 snow lysimeters. Meteorologic parameters and energy fluxes are available at 10 minute, hourly, and daily time steps. Complementary information includes a high-resolution digital elevation model (DEM), snowpack parameters, and stream discharge. Snowmelt data -3Williams et al.

Stream chemistry modeling of two watersheds in the Front Range , Colorado

We investigated the hydrologic, geochemical, and biogeochemical controls on stream chemical composition on the Green Lakes Valley and Andrews Creek watersheds using the alpine hydrochemical model (AHM). Both sites had comparable data sets from 1994 and 1996, including high-resolution spatial data and high-frequency time series of hydrology, geochemistry, and meteorology. The model of each water...

Source waters and flow paths in an alpine catchment, Colorado Front Range, United States

[1] Source waters and flow paths of streamflow draining high-elevation catchments of the Colorado Rocky Mountains were determined using isotopic and geochemical tracers during the 1996 snowmelt runoff season at two subcatchments of the Green Lakes Valley, Colorado Front Range. A two-component hydrograph separation using dO indicates that new water dominated (82 ± 6%) streamflow at the 8-ha Mart...

Estimating stream chemistry during the snowmelt pulse using a spatially distributed, coupled snowmelt and hydrochemical modeling approach

[1] We used remotely sensed snow cover data and a physically based snowmelt model to estimate the spatial distribution of energy fluxes, snowmelt, snow water equivalent, and snow cover extent over the different land cover types within the Green Lakes Valley, Front Range, Colorado. The spatially explicit snowpack model was coupled to the Alpine Hydrochemical Model (AHM), and estimates of hydroch...

Landscape-level nitrogen import and export in an ecosystem with complex terrain, Colorado Front Range

Knowledge of import, export, and transport of nitrogen (N) in headwater catchments is essential for understanding ecosystem function and water quality in mountain ecosystems, especially as these ecosystems experience increased anthropogenic N deposition. In this study, we link spatially explicit soil and stream data at the landscape scale to investigate import, export and transport of N in a 0....

Seasonal changes in the character and nitrogen content of dissolved organic matter in an alpine/subalpine headwater catchment.

We are studying the chemical quality of dissolved organic nitrogen (DON) in a high-elevation watershed in the Colorado Front Range. Samples were collected over the 2000 snowmelt runoff season at two sites across an alpine/subalpine ecotone to understand how the transition between the lightly vegetated alpine and forested reaches of the catchment influences the chemical character of DON. Samples...
